The Martyr

Now Doctor Rowland Taylor was his name,
This priest of God who did denounce the Pope.
He was then sent to perish in the flames,
Yet through it all he held on to some hope.

What gave him such a willingness to die?
What made him bold to jest at death itself?
What folly brought him joy as fire drew nigh?
What was so great that he thought not of self?

How could this man embrace his own life's end?
How did he keep from trembling in fear?
How stood he firm with none to him defend?
How held he fast when jeer came after jeer?

Not what or how, my friend, but truly who,
For Jesus Christ did pull this servant through.
